Alencon A delicate pattern of flowers and swirls, reembroidered with silk-like cording on a sheer net background. (pronounced “uh-le-sahn”)
Brocade A patterned fabric characterized by a satin weave background with one or more fillings used to make a motif.
Charmeuse An opaque lightweight semi-lustrous soft satin fabric.
Chiffon A delicate, sheer woven fabric with a soft drapeable character.
Crepe A light woven fabric with a pebbled textured surface
English Net A netting made of fine cotton yarn.
Faille A ribbed finish made with a crosswise weave (pronounced "file").
Flocking A process by which a very condensed powdered fiber is applied to the surface of a fabric to form a raised velvety pattern.
Georgette A sheer lightweight fabric with a crepe surface
Illusion A very fine tulle.
Iridescent A term often associated with either taffeta or satin that refers to the weaving of the warp and fill in different colored yarns so that as the fabric moves, different colors predominate
Jacquard A lightweight woven fabric with a satin background and a pattern woven into the cloth
Jersey A knitted opaque, drapeable, form-fitting fabric.
Net An open fabric with a mesh-like appearance that won't ravel.
Stretch Net An open fabric with a mesh-like appearance that won't ravel, and has a stretch quality.
Organza A crisp, sheer fabric with a crystal-like surface.
Dot Organza Organza with printed polka dots.
Satin An opaque tightly-woven fabric with a smooth, usually shiny, face and a dull underside
Luster Satin A lustrous smooth face satin fabric.
Matte Satin An opaque fabric in satin weave with a smooth, dull face.
Velour Satin An opaque fabric in satin weave with a soft hand and a dull face.
Mikado Fine woven fabric which has lots of luster and body.
Satin-back Crepe A reversible satin weave fabric. One surface is smooth and lustrous, the reverse is dull and crepe-like. Either may be used as the face.
Satin Organza A crisp, sheer fabric with a crystal-like satin finish.
Shantung A fabric woven with slubbed yarn to simulate the imperfections found in raw silk.
Soutache A narrow braid or ribbon sewn on the garment as a trim (pronounced "su-tash").
Taffeta A crisp, smooth woven fabric with a crosswise rib and either matte (dull) or shiny finish, that "rustles" with movement.
Tulle A fine net. May have either a stiff or soft finish.
Tullonet A firm net with stiff finish used to give fullness under skirts.
Veiling A very fine, soft net used for adorning headpieces.
Velvet A soft, luxurious fabric with a raised, napped pile face and plain underside.
